There are major changes ahead for one very lucky Canadian couple who just became multimillionaires after a major Lotto Max win.

Lotto Max players Joseph Gosselin-Rompré and Mylène Bourgeois live in the Montérégie region in Quebec. The couple had been away on a fishing trip and were returning home when they decided to check their lottery ticket.

It quickly turned into an unforgettable drive home when, after checking their ticket, they discovered that they had won the jackpot. Rompré recalled the shock of seeing the amount displayed on the phone screen.

“We couldn’t believe it at first,” he said.

They wanted to make sure it wasn’t a mistake, so they headed to a retailer to validate their ticket. The draw took place on Friday, June 26, and the winning numbers were 05, 06, 16, 30, 33, 43, and 51, with a bonus of 35 — they managed to match all seven numbers, winning the $40-million jackpot.

Just days after they found out about their life-changing win, Rompré and Bourgeois claimed their windfall during an event on Thursday at Loto-Québec’s head office in Montreal.

The couple said they want to use the money to spoil their three children, and they’re still trying to decide whether they should sell or renovate their family home.

Rompré, who’s in his 40s, said that the win will allow him to spend more time fishing and golfing, his two favourite hobbies. The outdoorsy dad plans on buying a boat and treating himself to a golf getaway.

Loto-Québec

The winning ticket was purchased at the Boni Soir convenience store located at 2455 Chemin Saint-Roch in Sorel-Tracy. The retailer will receive a one per cent commission of $400,000.

Before Rompré and Bourgeois, the most recent winner was Don Matheson of Lacombe, Alta., who won $15 million in the June 5 draw.
