A Sligo Councillor has called for changes to be introduced in relation to the manner in which National Lottery products are advertised with Cllr Donal Gilroy saying use of the words ‘play’ or ‘playing’ should be replaced with gamble or gambling in reference to National Lottery services.

Cllr Gilroy’s motion before the May meeting of Sligo County Council stated, “That Sligo County Council write to the Regulator of the National Lottery, The Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation to request that all advertising of National Lottery games replaces the words ‘play’ or ‘playing with ‘gamble’ or gambling’ due to the excessive amount of people who suffer from gambling addiction and have had their lives destroyed by such addictions.”

Speaking to the motion Cllr Gilroy said, “It’s gambling, there is no other name for playing the national lottery. Gambling is gambling. All the safety precautions they put on other things, should be put on the national lottery.”

Cllr Gilroy continued, “You can also play online, you don’t have to leave the bed. I know there are good causes but it really should be described as gambling.”

The motion was seconded by Cllr Michael Clarke who agreed, “It is gambling.”
