Powerball Raises Jackpot To $1B: What To Know In CA

Two tickets sold in California and Maryland matched all five white balls to win the Match 5 prize. The Match 5 prize is a set cash prize of $1 million, except in California, where prize payouts are pari-mutuel and determined by sales and the number of winners. Another ticket sold in Tennessee matched all five white balls and, because it included the Power Play option for an additional $1, increased its winnings to $2 million.

In the Double Play drawing, two tickets sold in Colorado and New Jersey won $500,000 prizes after matching all five black balls. Double Play is a $1 add-on feature that allows players to play their Powerball numbers again in a separate drawing for a chance to win up to $10 million.

Wednesday’s drawing will be the 44th consecutive drawing in the current jackpot run. The Powerball jackpot was last won on May 2, when two tickets in Florida and Texas split a $20 million jackpot.

Game leaders emphasized that proceeds from every $2 ticket sold during this jackpot run are helping support local communities where those tickets are purchased.

“This is the most exciting jackpot run we’ve seen all year, but it’s also important to remember that every $2 Powerball ticket purchased helps support public programs and services,” Stephen Durrell, Powerball Product Group chair and Kansas Lottery executive director, said in a news release. “Because a portion of each ticket sold stays where it was purchased, the benefits of Powerball are felt in communities across the country and around the world.”
