North Carolina woman wins $1M Powerball prize, three 50K tickets remain unclaimed
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – An North Carolina woman beat 1-in-11.6 million odds last week, turning a $2 Powerball ticket into a $1 million prize.
Janet Cornelius bought the ticket at the Hop-In-Citgo on North Road Street in Elizabeth City.
Soon after, she matched all five white balls in the Wednesday, Aug. 12 drawing.
Cornelius went to lottery headquarters Thursday, Aug. 13, to claim her prize, which amounted to $720,100 after taxes.
Pasquotank County, the county seat of Elizabeth City, received $2.5 million in support from lottery funds last year, official said.
Three other North Carolinas beat the odds, taking home $50,000 ticket prizes in Elizabeth City, Charlotte, and New Bern.
These winners have 180 days from the drawing to claim their prize.
The North Carolina Powerball sat at $35 million as of this writing.
