Mega Millions, Powerball jackpots reach over $650 million

(WSET) — Lottery fever is growing as both the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots have climbed above $650 million, marking only the second time both games have reached that milestone at the same time.

The Mega Millions jackpot is an estimated $800 million ahead of Tuesday night’s drawing, while the Powerball jackpot stands at an estimated $663 million before Wednesday night’s drawing.

The soaring jackpots caught many people by surprise. Several Mega Millions players told ABC13 they didn’t even realize the Powerball drawing was happening until they heard how large the jackpots had become. After learning how much money was on the line, many said they decided to buy a ticket.

When asked what they would do if they won, many said they would use the money to help family, give back to their communities or enjoy a more comfortable life.

Albert Wilson said helping others would be his top priority.

“First thing I’m going to do is re-invest in the community and get my kids up out of here and put them in better housing. Use the rest of the money to help my cousin and self to get on his feet, and we’re just going to enjoy life.”

Linda Elrod said her family would come first.

“I would definitely buy my mom a house. And then take care of my two boys, my sons, a mechanic, and he deserves to get a house, whatever, and take care of my grandkids.”

Lorna Bolton said she’d use the winnings to change her own life.

“If I won, I would definitely pay off all my bills, quit my job, and live a life of luxury.”

For now, players can only wait for the drawings and see whether their numbers are called.

The Mega Millions drawing is scheduled for 11 p.m. Tuesday. The next Powerball drawing will be held at 11 p.m. Wednesday.
