Cornwall gardener wins £100,000 on scratchcard after “spur-of-the-moment” bulk buy

The man, who is in his 40s, scooped the six-figure prize on Wednesday, May 13 after purchasing a £2 ‘20X’ Scratchcard from a local shop.

Describing the moment, he said the win felt “unbelievable” and “life-changing” for him and his family.

He said: “It’s unbelievable and absolutely life-changing for me and my family. I only bought the Scratchcard on a whim, so to win £100,000 still feels surreal. The first thing we’ll do is open some Champagne to celebrate, and then we’ll treat the family to a holiday we’ll never forget.”

The Penryn man now plans to mark the occasion with a celebratory drink before taking his family away on a special trip.

Liz Styles, Winners’ Advisor at Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, congratulated the winner.

She said: “Congratulations to our lucky Penryn winner. What a fantastic return on a spur-of-the-moment Scratchcard! We wish him and his family a wonderful celebration and a well-deserved holiday.”

The ‘20X’ Scratchcard costs £2, with an overall chance of winning a prize of one in 3.29.

National Lottery organisers say that, beyond the chance of winning, players also help fund projects across the UK. Around £33 million is raised each week for good causes, with more than £53 billion generated since the Lottery began, supporting initiatives ranging from community groups to arts, sport and heritage projects.

Players can buy and check tickets online via the National Lottery app or website, as well as in retail outlets.
