Australia’s luckiest lottery hotspots revealed

Some Australians hoping tonight’s $40 million Powerball draw could change their lives have been given a fresh reason to dream, with new figures revealing where the nation’s biggest lottery wins have landed over the past year.

The latest data from The Lott shows almost $1.5 billion in Division One prize money was won by 492 entries across Australia during the last financial year, creating hundreds of new millionaires.

Victorians had the most reason to celebrate, recording 138 Division One wins — which is more than a quarter of the national total.

The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart told Sunrise Victoria was followed by New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.

“In Victoria they welcomed the biggest individual lottery win last financial year, an Altona man who scored $80 million,” Hart said.

Despite recording fewer Division One wins, NSW players took home the largest share of prize money collecting a combined $452 million — about $25 million more than Victorian winners.

“A lot of Oz Lotto and Powerball jackpots went NSW’s way last financial year,” Hart said.

The figures also reveal some postcodes have become unlikely lottery hotspots.

Melbourne’s CBD and Earlville in Far North Queensland each sold four Division One-winning entries during the past financial year, the highest number of any postcode in Australia.

Other areas to record multiple Division One wins included Sydney and Alice Springs.

With another $40 million up for grabs tonight, Hart said there was no secret formula for picking a winning ticket.

“Some people gravitate towards those outlets and postcodes that do have a track record of Division One wins, while others think, well, lottery lightning may not strike twice, so perhaps go elsewhere,” he said.

“It really shows that wins can land anywhere, because it’s really the top and the bottom of Australia.”
