A man was visited by lottery luck on his birthday after his game play strategy paid off in Ohio.
The lucky winner, identified as Antwan, likes to use his birthdate — 520 — when he plays, and that’s exactly what he did when he bought a few scratchers in Columbus, according to a Friday, May 22, news release from the Ohio Lottery.
First, he learned he’d won $50 from a scratch-off, after which he bought five more tickets, lottery officials said.
His winning streak continued with four out of the five tickets carrying prizes that ranged from $20 to $50, the lottery said.
Hoping his luck would continue, he bought one more Extreme Cash scratcher, officials said.
At first, Antwan thought he’d scored another $50, but after the clerk scanned the ticket, he realized he’d been missing a few zeroes. He’d actually won $50,000, lottery officials said.
“You can’t win unless you play. And I’m going to keep playing,” he told lottery officials.
Then he rushed to share the good news with his wife, who didn’t believe him until she saw the ticket for herself, lottery officials said. In fact, she thought he was joking.
These weren’t the man’s first wins — last November he scored a $50,000 win with a Pick 5 game, and landed $10,000 after buying a Billion scratch-off in March, the release said.

After state and federal taxes were removed, Antwan walked away with $36,366.25, the lottery said.
As for what he plans to do with the money? The couple plans to use his winnings to make some updates to their home and hair salon and go on a cruise, the lottery said.
