One North Carolina woman received a major payday after she decided to buy her first-ever lottery ticket on a whim.
Gastonia resident Kahla Jeffries said it all went down when she stopped into Will’s Food Store on Hickory Grove Road during a routine gas stop, according to a press release from the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL).
A particular scratch-off ticket stood out to her and she decided to take a chance.
“That one just caught my eye,” she recalled, per the NCEL.

The ticket — a $100,000 Cash Payday scratch-off — turned out to be a $100,000 top-prize winner.
When she realized what she’d won, Jeffries said she could hardly believe it.
“I didn’t think I was looking at it right,” she said.
Jeffries visited lottery headquarters to claim her prize on July 24. She took home $72,018 after required federal and state tax withholdings, per NCEL.
Jeffries said she plans to use her winnings to buy a car and save for school.

The $100,000 Cash Payday scratch-off game debuted in March with 80 top prizes worth $100,000 each.
As of July 24, 58 of those prizes remained unclaimed, according to NCEL.
