Winner of second-largest NC lottery jackpot now revealed as Halifax County man

HALIFAX COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A Halifax County man chose to remain anonymous for months after winning a big chunk of change.

Richard Kee Jr. tried his luck on a $2 Powerball ticket on January 21st and hit the $209.3 million jackpot.

The Roanoke Rapids man scored the second-largest jackpot win in North Carolina history, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Kee chose to remain anonymous for 90 days after his win. Under state law, a lottery player can choose to keep their win anonymous for up to 90 days after claiming the prize.

He bought his ticket from West 10th Mart on West 10th Street in Roanoke Rapids.

Kee went to claim his prize on January 22nd. He had the choice between an annuity of $209.3 million that would be paid in 30 payments over 29 years or the lump sum of $95.3 million.

He chose to collect the lump sum. After federal and state tax withholdings, Kee took from $68.6 million.
