Someone in New York Has an Unclaimed $1 Million Powerball Play
If you play Powerball in New York, you might be wise to take another look at your past tickets.
The New York Lottery is encouraging Powerball players to review their ticket slips in the hopes that someone will come forward and claim an outstanding $1 million prize. State lottery officials say the prize-winning ticket was drawn during the Powerball drawing on Aug. 6, 2025.
The lucky play was sold at Diamond News, a bodega located at 631 2nd Avenue, New York, NY, 10016. The store is between East 34th and 35th streets in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood.
In New York, lottery tickets must be redeemed within one year of the game’s drawing. That means the holder of the $1 million Powerball ticket must come forward no later than Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026.
Powerball Ticket Details
The winning numbers for the Powerball drawing on Aug. 6, 2025, were 15, 27, 43, 45, and 53. The red Powerball was 9. The outstanding ticket matched all five white balls but failed to match the Powerball.
The New York win was one of four that matched all five white balls during the Aug. 6, 2025, drawing. The three others have since been redeemed. None of the tickets had the $1 add-on Power Play, which would have doubled their payouts to $2 million.
The Lottery advises whoever has the winning ticket: Sign the back of the ticket, put it in a safe place, and contact the New York Lottery at 518-388-3370 or visit www.nylottery.ny.gov for information on how to claim their prize.”
New York Lottery
New York is home to the largest and most profitable lottery in the country, contributing $3.65 billion in fiscal year 2025-2026 to benefit public schools in New York State.
Millions of winning lottery tickets go unclaimed each year, though most are only small wins. Tickets are often mistakenly thought to be losers and trashed, while others are lost.
The largest lottery prize in the United States to ever go unclaimed was in 2011. Despite warnings from the Georgia Lottery, a ticket sold at a Pilot Travel Center in Tallapoosa for the June 29, 2011, draw expired. The ticket was worth $77 million.
$1 Million Isn’t What It Used To Be
The holder of the $1 million Powerball ticket in New York, should they come forward, would be responsible for both federal and state taxes on the windfall. The $1 million prize would be reduced by a 37% federal tax and a further 10.9% by New York.
The fed’s take would be approximately $370,000, and New York would collect $109,000 for a net payout of approximately $521,000. If the winner is a New York City resident, the prize would be further subjected to local taxes of 3.876%, or roughly $38,760, bringing the final award to below $482,240.
