Pikeville woman scores $100,000 on scratch-off

PIKEVILLE, N.C. — A Pikeville woman says she and her partner couldn’t contain their excitement after discovering a winning North Carolina Education Lottery scratch-off worth $100,000.

Cassandra Joyner won the top prize playing a $30 $100,000 Cash Payday scratch-off ticket she purchased at 919 Wireless and Vape on Goldsboro Street in Pikeville.

“We were doing our happy dance and screaming,” Joyner said. “Then we cried.”

Joyner said the win still feels surreal.

She claimed her prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Joyner took home $72,018.

Joyner plans to use her winnings to pay bills.

The $100,000 Cash Payday scratch-off game launched in March with 80 top prizes. According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, 59 top prizes of $100,000 remain to be claimed.
