No more northern commute for Langdon man after $5M Lotto 6/49 win

A Langdon man who played the same Lotto 6/49 numbers every week is planning to retire after winning $5 million.

James Munro won the prize on the June 13 Lotto 6/49 draw through Play Alberta, nearly 44 years after Lotto 6/49 first launched, according to a June 23 news release from Play Alberta.

Play Alberta said Munro found out the next morning, as he was waking up for work, when he saw an email from the Play Alberta team telling him he had won.

“I didn’t have my glasses on and I was looking at the email and said to myself ‘I can’t see the number,’” Munro said in the release.

“When I put my glasses on, it [the prize] was very big. It’s shocking… when it will set in is in two weeks’ time when I don’t have to drive [up north] to work.”

Winner plans to retire

According to the release, Munro sent a message to his wife, who also had trouble processing the number of zeroes.

Munro has not finalized what he will do with the money, but Play Alberta said he hinted at an international golf trip and a desire to visit Australia.

The $5-million prize ties the largest prize ever won on Play Alberta, described in the release as Alberta’s only regulated iGaming website.

Play Alberta said this month’s win matches a $5-million payout from May 2025, which was also under the Lotto 6/49 banner.

Gaming revenue

According to Play Alberta, the platform generated $289 million in net sales in 2025-26, up $20 million from the previous year.

The release said that money contributes to $1.5 billion in total gaming revenue sent to Alberta’s General Revenue Fund.

Play Alberta said it also offers GameSense tools and self-exclusion options for players.
