A truly life-changing jackpot of £444M was up for grabs for one lucky player last night (Saturday, 8 August) after the National Lottery Powerball draw rolled over on Thursday (6 August).

National Lottery operator Allwyn only launched Powerball in the UK last month, giving Brits the opportunity to go up against their US counterparts to win an “unlimited” jackpot.

Priced at £4 per line, UK players can enter the Powerball for a chance to win the shared jackpot by matching five main numbers plus the Powerball, with the money paid out to UK winners over 30 years.

In a Powerball draw, players choose five main numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26, or can opt for a Lucky Dip. The draw takes place every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Tickets can be purchased online on the National Lottery website or from participating stores across the UK, but tickets must be purchased by 11:55pm the night before a draw to be able to enter.

Did anyone win the £444 million?

Nobody won last night’s Powerball draw, which means the jackpot rolls over to £467 million. The numbers drawn on Saturday night were 5, 9, 35, 54 and 63. The Powerball was 7.

To be in with a chance of winning that prize, you must enter the draw by 11.55pm on Monday (10 August). The draw will then take place on Tuesday (11 August).

The chances of scooping the huge Powerball jackpot are around one in 292.2million. For comparison, the odds of winning the EuroMillions jackpot are around one in 139.8million – meaning a player is more than twice as likely to hit the EuroMillions jackpot as the Powerball.

The odds are the same for players in the UK and US, with Powerball confirming its recent expansion to Britain did not change the game’s odds or drawing process.

Why is the Powerball jackpot paid over 30 years?

As mentioned previously, anyone lucky enough to scoop the enormous Powerball jackpot will not receive the entire advertised sum at once, as the top prize is paid out over 30 years.

The system allows winners to receive a higher total prize than they would through a one-off lump sum, while providing substantial regular payments that can help with long-term financial planning.

The final amount paid is determined after the winning claim has been validated and Allwyn receives the prize funds from the US, using the applicable exchange rates at that time. The jackpot may also be subject to taxes in certain circumstances.
