Lottery ticket holder wins £10m… then misses deadline to claim it
A lottery ticket-holder won a jackpot of more than £10m, only to miss the deadline to claim it.
The National Lottery said that the winner, who had bought the ticket in Bexley, south-east London, on Oct 4 last year, had failed to claim the prize after 180 days.
After an “extensive search”, no valid claim had been made by the cut-off date last Thursday – and the money will now be donated to charity.
“Despite an extensive search for the mystery Bexley millionaire, I can confirm that the ticket-holder did not come forward to claim their Lotto prize and has now unfortunately missed out on this life-changing sum of money,” said Andy Carter, the senior winners’ adviser at Allwyn, the National Lottery’s operator.
“However, the money will now benefit Good Causes and add to the £33m raised each week for National Lottery-funded projects, several of which can be found in the Bexley area.”
National Lottery players have supported several projects across Bexley, including the Erith Exchange, a community-led arts and crafts organisation, and You & Me Happy Family Children’s Disability Trust.
A spokesman for Allwyn said: “It’s very unusual for a prize of this size to go unclaimed. The majority of prizes that would go unclaimed would be the smaller-tier prizes.”
There are currently five major National Lottery prizes worth more than £3.2m which are yet to be claimed. Three are £1m EuroMillions or Lotto tickets.
