Ireland’s biggest ever Lotto winners could afford anything, but kept one habit

One year on from Ireland’s record-breaking €250 million EuroMillions win, the family behind the historic jackpot is being remembered for a surprising reason.

It has been one year since a family scooped the biggest Lotto prize Ireland has ever seen – walking away with a life-changing €250 million EuroMillions jackpot.

The record-breaking winners were suddenly able to buy anything they wanted – but despite their extraordinary new wealth, they insisted there was one simple habit they had no intention of giving up.

The family syndicate, who choose to remain private, claimed the historic prize after buying the winning ticket at Clifford’s Centra on Shandon Street in Cork city centre.

Following the windfall, they revealed that they still planned to enjoy their favourite ham and cheese sandwich for lunch.

One member did admit there was one luxury item they had always dreamed of buying, joking that owning a Rolex watch was finally within reach after years of admiring them from afar.

The group described the experience of discovering they had won as “surreal” and recalled how they realised they were Ireland’s newest multimillionaires while checking their numbers at home.

But before any lavish spending, they spoke about supporting their wider family, giving back to causes close to their hearts and enjoying more time together.

Tuesday marks exactly one year since the record-breaking ticket was sold ahead of the historic EuroMillions draw on June 17, 2025.

The €250 million jackpot remains the largest prize ever won in Ireland and was the country’s 18th EuroMillions jackpot win since the game launched in 2004.

Clifford’s Centra owner Ted Clifford said: “Looking back a year later, it still feels surreal that such a huge win came through our doors. It gave everyone here a real lift, and customers still talk about it to this day.

“We hope the winner is enjoying every moment and that it’s brought them great joy. Being part of milestones like that is what makes our long history on Shandon Street so special, and we couldn’t be prouder. We are planning to celebrate the win in-store today – moments like this have to be marked!”

National Lottery spokesperson Sarah Orr added: “Can you believe that it’s been one year since we celebrated the largest National Lottery win ever to be seen in Ireland? The win remains one of the most historic moments in our history and of course for Clifford’s Centra.

“The €250 million win became the 18th EuroMillions jackpot that we have ever had in Ireland. Since then, we celebrated our 19th EuroMillions jackpot win last December when Lidl Cavan sold a winning ticket worth €17 million. With tonight’s jackpot set to roll towards an estimated €25 million, could we see another big win in Ireland soon?”
