Two tickets on almost opposite ends of Australia’s east coast have split a $40 million lottery bonanza.
A Tasmanian man and a mystery owner of a ticket bought in Hervey Bay were the winners of the Oz Lotto jackpot on Tuesday.

The man from Sorell, about 25 kilometres north-east of Hobart, burst into tears and told lottery officials he almost didn’t buy a ticket because “I struggled to get to the newsagent tonight”. He claimed he was at work late and arrived “a couple of minutes before closing”.
“Holy smokes. Wow. Unbelievable,” the unidentified man said when he was told of the win, according to The Lott.
“That is life changing. It’s come at a really good time.
“I’ll paint you a really good picture of what that means for us. We’ve been renting and have been looking for another house to move to. This is like – now we’ll just buy a house.”
The man said he was close to retirement and with his winnings he will plan some overseas travel, probably to Texas and Arizona.
“Holy smokes. I appreciate the call. Geez, I’m shocked. I’m so happy. It’s just a weight off your shoulders.
“You’re god.”
The Lott said the owner of the ticket purchased in Hervey Bay was unregistered so remained a mystery on Tuesday night. The new multimillionaire could be a resident or visitor in the Queensland city about 300 kilometres north of Brisbane.
The winning numbers in Oz Lotto draw 1695 were 2, 19, 27, 35, 7, 22 and 30, and the supplementary numbers were 37, 41 and 32.
