The money bag continues to grow for the Powerball lottery after no ticket matched all six winning numbers in Wednesday night’s drawing. The Powerball jackpot increased to an $1.5 billion, the fifth-largest in the game’s history, with a cash value of $686.5 million.

The jackpot last topped $1 billion in September, when two tickets, including one sold in Texas, split a $1.8 billion prize. More recently, a $1 million Powerball ticket was sold in Fort Worth for the Dec. 6 drawing.

The jackpot has risen t0 $1.60 billion, with a cash value of $735.3 million.

The money represents the fourth-largest in Powerball prize in history.

The next drawing is at 10:12 p.m. CT on Monday, Dec. 22, but ticket sales close at 9 p.m. Powerball drawings occur every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

To play Powerball, you first select five white ball numbers. These five numbers will be between one and 69. Then, pick one “Powerball,” or red ball, number. This number will be between one and 26.  

You could also choose to have the lottery machine randomly select your numbers for you.

For an extra dollar, you may choose to “power play,” which multiplies all non-grand prize winnings by a factor of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10.
