Construction worker celebrates £1 million National Lottery win

The winner, from Brighton and in his 50s, scooped the prize in the Lotto draw on Saturday, June 6, by matching five main numbers and the Bonus Ball.

He plans to pay off his mortgage, and hopes to put the rest of his win into savings and donations to charitable organisations.

The man, who has not been named, said he could hardly believe his luck.

He said: “I’ve only ever played the Lotto and had numerous small wins in the past but nothing big, so this is absolutely amazing.

“I cannot believe it was me.”

Liz Styles, winners advisor at Allwyn, operator of the National Lottery, congratulated the winner and praised his generosity.

She said: “We are so pleased that our winner is supporting charitable organisations close to his own heart.

“We’d also like to tell him that in his disbelief, it can always be you.”

Changes to the Lotto launched on June 10 now give players two chances to win with each £2 line.

The new format is expected to make around 345 people millionaires each year, up from the previous average of 140.

This change will also boost funding for National Lottery Good Causes.

Each week, around £33 million is raised for projects across the UK, with more than £53 billion generated since the National Lottery began.

This funding supports the arts and sport sectors, empowers local community groups and preserves iconic British landmarks in every postcode area across the UK.
