California player wins $1.4 million Powerball prize as jackpot hits $975 million

A Powerball ticket sold in California fell just one number short of winning the $929 million jackpot, lottery officials said.

Instead, the lucky ticket won $1,478,686.

The ticket matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball in the drawing Monday, Aug. 10, the California State Lottery said.

The winning ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven at 5700 Santa Monica Blvd. in Los Angeles, lottery officials said.

The Power Play multiplier was 3x.

A ticket sold in Tennessee won $2 million, and one sold in Maryland won $1 million.
