An Illinois Powerball Player Just Won $1 Billion
Winning the lottery is always sweet, right? Even as much as $5 is good enough for me – a soda or a snack!
But one Illinois Powerball player has just woken up with extremely, extremely good news. Don’t get too jealous, but they ended up winning over $1 billion.
Per People, the winning numbers for Wednesday, August 12, were whites 4, 26, 66, 67, and 69, and the Powerball was 9. The odds of getting all of these numbers correct is 1 in 292.2 million.
To put that into context, you’re more likely to flip a coin and have it land on heads 28 times in a row than you are to put those numbers on a page and have them match.
According to TCPalm, the winner purchased their ticket in Quincy, Illinois, per lottery officials. The city is in western Illinois, around 135 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri, and 300 miles south-west of Chicago, Illinois.
A $1 billion Powerball draw sounds pretty crazy, right? Well, it’s because no one’s won the darn thing since May 4th. I guess the Star Wars day didn’t give anyone much luck – I think the force wasn’t with them?

But, strangely enough, this win doesn’t even crack the top 10.
The largest Powerball prize ever was $2.04 billion dollars. It was won by an unidentified California ticket holder on November 7, 2022.
However, the second-largest prize was a little more recent – Christmas Eve 2025, to be exact. Per People, the $1.8 billion winner opted to take the one-time cash option.
Sharon Strong, the executive of the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery, explained the lucky winner had “took the time to seek legal counsel and financial advice” prior to actually getting the funds.
About the win, Strong explained, “We’re proud to celebrate this moment, not only for our Arkansas winner and for Murphy USA, the Arkansas-based company that sold the winning ticket, but also for the positive impact this historic jackpot will have on our state and our mission to raise funds for in-state scholarships.”
