Hero EuroMillions winner with baby on the way killed in hit and run

A EuroMillions winner, who saved the life of a police officer before the win, has died in a suspected hit and run.

Anthony Canty was cycling earlier this year when he was involved in a collision with a black Ford Ka.

The tragedy unfolded on Maldon Road in Tiptree, a village in Essex, at around 6.30am on the morning of May 21.

The father-of-two was taken to hospital by ambulance, where his condition was described as serious. He passed away from his injuries four days later on May 25.

Mr Canty became a millionaire in May 2020, just months after he performed life-saving CPR on a police officer who was having a heart attack on an inter-city bus.

The 39-year-old had stayed in contact with the police office and his wife after he recovered, and was wisely told ‘good karma happens to good people.’

Shortly after, Mr Canty and his wife became millionaires following a EuroMillions victory.

At the time, the Essex man recalled thinking he had won £100,000 only for his wife to check and realise their fate.

The couple had detailed their plans to take their two daughters to Disneyland as well as buy a new home.

Earlier this year, Mr Canty lost his life following a fatal road traffic accident with a Ford Ka.

Paying tribute, Kate said: ‘Anthony was an amazing husband and the best dad. He was one of a kind and we were so lucky to have him in our lives.

‘The pain of losing him is the worst pain imaginable. Every day feels overwhelming and we are completely lost without him.’

The Mirror reports that Kate went on to say that her husband was a ‘hardworking, loving family man’ who had a ‘heart of gold.’

‘Life will never be the same without him,’ she said. ‘He really was one in a million and one of a kind. I still can’t believe he has been taken from us so tragically.

‘I have lost my husband, my two girls have lost their dad, and he will never get to meet our unborn baby. We are completely broken.’

Kate concluded that her only comfort was the knowledge of how loved Anthony was.

An 18-year-old remains under investigation as Essex Police continue to work through enquiries.
