The timestamp on his online ticket read 7:29.25pm, scraping in with just moments to go.
When called by officials after the draw to be informed of his winnings, the unnamed man was caught by surprise.
“I can’t believe it,” he said, according to The Lott.
“My wife is asking me if it’s real. She’s walking around the house and has poured herself a brandy.
“We don’t normally play Powerball, but tonight I saw it was $20 million and thought I’d have a crack at that and have a bit of fun. I bought the ticket with about a minute to go.”
He used a mix of family birthdates “and then a few random numbers” to come up with his winning pick.
Draw 1578’s winning numbers were 27, 6, 35, 17, 11, 15 and 26, and the Powerball was 11.
The man’s windfall was bolstered another $485,253.35 after his PowerHit entry also landed division two 19 times.
After an around-the-world trip, the winner will use the money for “some investment strategies to set the family up for the future”.
