The lucky winner from Ndwedwe became the first PowerBall jackpot winner under the new National Lottery operator, Sizekhaya, after matching all the winning numbers in the draw held on Tuesday, 2 June.

The man bought his ticket at a Boxer store using manually selected numbers that held special meaning for him and his family.

Like millions of South Africans, he watched the live PowerBall draw on e.tv and was stunned as his numbers kept appearing.

“I could hardly believe what I was seeing,” he said.

“As each number appeared, I became more and more convinced that something extraordinary was happening. When the final numbers were drawn, I was overwhelmed with disbelief.”

Unable to contain his excitement, he waited until the next day to verify his ticket at an authorised Sizekhaya retailer, before contacting the nearest regional office for official validation.

The winner, who has been playing National Lottery games for more than 15 years, said becoming a multi-millionaire was something he never thought would happen.

“This win means everything to me and my family,” he said.

“It gives us an opportunity to build a better future and create lasting opportunities for generations to come.”

Having experienced long periods of unemployment, the winner said one of his priorities will be improving his family’s home and ensuring a more secure future for his loved ones.

A Sizekhaya spokesperson described the jackpot as a historic milestone.
