Powerball jackpot climbs to $65M for Groundhog Day drawing

The Powerball jackpot for Monday, Feb. 2, better known as Groundhog Day, is $65 million, with a cash value of $29.4 million after no ticket matched all six numbers in the Jan. 31 drawing.

This year has already seen one Powerball jackpot winner. On Jan. 22, a single ticket purchased in North Carolina matched all six numbers to win $209 million. The winner claimed the lump sum option of $95.3 million, taking home $68.6 million after federal and state tax withholdings.

The next Powerball drawing is Monday night. Here’s what to know.

Do you have to be a US citizen or resident to play Powerball?

The short answer is no — you don’t have to be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident to play Powerball.

When visiting one of the 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, anyone, regardless of nationality, can purchase lottery tickets from an authorized and licensed retailer, if they meet the legal age requirement at the point of purchase — usually 18 years old.

How to play Powerball

Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Pick five white balls (1-69) and one red Powerball (1-26).

Add “Power Play” for $1 to multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to 10X.

If you want the computer to select the numbers, the “Quick Pick” option is also available. To win the jackpot, players must match all five white balls in any order and the red Powerball.

Powerball drawings are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. If no one wins the jackpot, the cash prize will climb.
