Northwest Iowa man wins $100,000-a-Year-for-Life in the Iowa Lottery

CLIVE, Iowa (KTIV) – A Calhoun County man won $100,000 a year for life after stopping at a Sac City store for a cream soda.

A press release from the Iowa Lottery says 61-year-old Doug Dearborn of Lohrville won $100,000 a year for life in Iowa’s Millionaire for Life™ game.

“His lucky ticket matched all five white balls in Friday’s drawing to win at the game’s second prize level of $100,000 a year for life,” said Iowa Lottery. “It was the first Match-5 prize won nationwide since the game’s start in February.”

Iowa Lottery says the winning numbers from Friday’s drawing were 14-16-21-43-51 and a Millionaire Ball™ 3.

“Looking to quench a craving for a cream soda, Dearborn stopped at Brew, 210 W. Main St. in Sac City. He also purchased a Millionaire for Life™ ticket with four quick pick plays on it,” said the press release from the Iowa Lottery.

After the drawing, he stopped at a different store to check the ticket on the retailer’s self-checker. After scanning it for a second time, he asked a store employee to verify what he was seeing and then checked for a third time to be sure.

“I looked around and went, ‘WOOO!’” Dearborn told the Iowa Lottery. “I think the whole store heard me. I’d say it was a dead giveaway I won something.”

Iowa Lottery says Dearborn “chose to receive his prize in its lump-sum option of $2.2 million.”

They also say he plans to invest most of his winnings into retirement, but isn’t ruling out the purchase of a new vehicle and a vacation.
