Midwest Powerball winner gets $1 billion; 2 Michigan tickets worth $50K

People buy lottery tickets for the $2.6 million lottery drawing at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62
A weekly lottery drawing by a Sarnia legion branch is drawing massive crowds from the US and Canada. Local streets turn into a block party every week.
A lucky soul in Illinois won the $1 billion Powerball jackpot Wednesday.
Lottery officials said the prize was the largest Powerball prize won so far this year and the eighth-largest jackpot in the game’s history. After months of rollovers, the prize became one of the largest jackpots Powerball has ever awarded.
Wednesday’s Powerball drawing was also the first jackpot run to include players from the United Kingdom since Powerball ticket sales launched there on July 21.
The winning ticket was purchased at a Hy-Vee gas station in Quincy, Illinois, lottery officials said. The winner can choose the estimated $1.040 billion annuity or a $450.5 million lump-sum cash option before taxes.
Officials said the winning numbers in the Wednesday Powerball drawing were white balls 4, 26, 66, 67, 69 and red Powerball 9. The Power Play® multiplier was 2.
Officials urge players to check their tickets since more than 3 million tickets won cash prizes in the drawing by matching one or more of the winning numbers.
Four tickets sold in Arizona, California, Florida and North Carolina matched all five white balls to win the Match 5 prize. The Match 5 prize is a set cash prize of $1 million, except in California, where prize payouts are pari-mutuel and determined by sales and the number of winners. A fifth ticket sold in Massachusetts also matched all five white balls and, because it included the Power Play option for an additional $1, increased its winnings to $2 million.
Michigan Lottery officials said two tickets, each for a $50,000 prize, were sold in the Great Lakes State for Wednesday’s drawing.
The next Powerball drawing will take place on Saturday, Aug. 15, at around 10:59 p.m. ET. The drawing can be watched live on Powerball’s website. After a jackpot winner, the new prize is now worth an estimated $20 million.
