Engle Lane stages Pulitzer Prize-winning musical ‘Next to Normal’

Engle Lane Theatre in Streator is set to stage “Next to Normal,” the 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winning musical this weekend.

The production tells the story of a suburban family navigating grief, love, loss, and emotional health challenges through music and relatable characters, according to the theater.

Director Kim Freeman said the production centers on authenticity, compassion and connection.

“Next to Normal has been my favorite musical for more than 14 years,” Freeman said. “It is a reminder that everyone is carrying something that may not be seen on the outside. My hope is that audiences leave feeling moved by the performance and that even in difficult times, there are others who can connect with them.”

The musical won three Tony Awards alongside its Pulitzer Prize.

Due to mature themes, the production is recommended for audiences 16 and older. The show contains strong language and explores emotional health challenges, grief, trauma and loss.

Remaining performances are scheduled for:

• Saturday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m.

• Sunday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m.
