Did you know?: NC Education Lottery

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Did you know that the North Carolina Education Lottery has raised billions of dollars for education in the state?
The North Carolina State Lottery Act was signed on August 31, 2005. Seven months later, the first lottery scratch-off tickets went on sale. Two months after that, Powerball was introduced. By its second year, the lottery had raised $1 billion. Since its inception, the lottery has raised more than $12 billion for education in the state.
Pitt County received $10,706,994 from the lottery in 2015 for education. Over $2 million of that went toward school construction and repair, about $6 million was given to school staff and more than $1 million was put toward college scholarships. A little over $1 million went to the N.C. pre-k program, which helps four-year-old children at risk of falling behind their peers prepare for kindergarten. The rest, $311,339, paid for school transportation.
