The Powerball jackpot may soon rank among the top three largest grand prizes in the game’s history, as the total has now reached $1.7 billion.

The cash value of Saturday’s $1.6 billion jackpot, the fourth-largest in the game’s history, was estimated at $735.3 million. Now, the jackpot has hit an estimated $1.7 billion ahead of the next drawing. This grand prize is among the highest of Powerball and has outperformed the highest Mega Millions jackpot.

This total comes only a few months after a lucky winner won the $1.787 billion grand prize in September, the second-highest jackpot in the game’s history.

Here are the winning numbers for the Dec. 22 drawing.

How much is the Powerball jackpot now?

The jackpot ahead of the Dec. 24 drawing has reached an estimated $1.7 billion, with a lump-sum payment of $781.3 million, according to powerball.com.

The current jackpot is the fourth-largest in Powerball history. It is also the fourth-largest jackpot in U.S. history between Powerball and Mega Millions.

How much is the jackpot take-home?

Both the $1.7 billion annuitized prize and the $781.3 million lump-sum cash payment amounts would be before taxes. If the winner chooses the annuity option, they will receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.

The plan will go over which payout options are available:

  • Annuity: One immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, with each payment being 5% larger than the previous one.
  • Lump sum: One-time payment equal to all of the cash in the jackpot prize pool.

If a player wins the jackpot, they can choose between an annuitized prize of $1.60 billion and a lump-sum payment of $735.3 million. The amounts are both pre-tax. After taxes, the prize comes to $588.8 million if the winner chooses the lump-sum option, Forbes estimates.

The winner would face a 24% federal withholding tax upon picking the lump sum. However, since the prize would make them subject to the highest federal marginal tax rate of 37%, that would bring the total down to $463.2 million, according to the outlet.

If the winner selects the annuity option, they receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year. After federal taxes, the annual amount would be $33.6 million, and the net jackpot would be about $1 billion, once all payments are completed.

Thankfully, for those playing in Tennessee, you won’t have to worry about state taxes. As Tennessee does not have a state income tax, it is among eight states that do not impose secondary state taxes on lottery winnings.
