Charlevoix County woman wins $2.2 million in Michigan Lottery’s Millionaire For Life
Charlevoix County player scores $2.2 million in Michigan Lottery drawing.
“I’ve been playing Millionaire For Life on and off since the game started earlier this year,” said the player. “I had an urge to buy a ticket while I was out and about one day, so I went to the closest store and bought one.”
The winner, a 66-year-old Charlevoix County woman who chose to remain anonymous, purchased the winning ticket at Mancelona North EZ Mart, 8150 U.S. 131 NE in Mancelona, about 35 miles northeast of Traverse City.
She matched the five white balls: 03, 15, 16, 24 and 28, in the May 21 drawing to win the game’s second-tier prize.
“The next day, I scanned my ticket at a store, and a message came up to contact the lottery office. I thought the scanner was broken, so I went out to my car to check the numbers on MichiganLottery.com,” she said. “I saw a winning ticket was purchased in Mancelona, and then I saw I’d matched all five numbers. I yelled, ‘I just won $2.2 million!’ and did a happy dance in my car.”
She collected her winnings at the lottery office, choosing a single $2.2 million payout instead of yearly installments. With the money, she intends to buy a new house, car and boat.
According to the Michigan Lottery, this was the first time a player has claimed the game’s $100,000-a-year-for-life second prize since Millionaire For Life launched Feb. 22.
Millionaire For Life tickets cost $5 per play, with prizes ranging from $8 to lifetime payouts. The game’s top prize awards $1 million a year for life to players who match all five white balls, selected from 1 to 58, and the Millionaire Ball, chosen from 1 to 5.
Players who match all five white balls but not the Millionaire Ball win $100,000 a year for life. Drawings are held daily at 11:15 p.m.
