Bus Driver Wins $5M On Number 59 Days After 59th Birthday On Ticket Sold At Hyattsville Store – AOL
Happy Birthday!
A school bus driver from DC gave himself an unexpected 59th birthday surprise: a $5 million Maryland Lottery jackpot that’s going to benefit the whole family.
Maurice Williams was all smiles on Tuesday, May 5, days after his birthday, when he went to Lottery Headquarters in Baltimore to claim the first $5 million top prize on the $5,000,000 LUXE scratch-off game.
Williams said he was on his way to work when he stopped by 7-Eleven in the 7200 block of Sheriff Road in Hyattsville to cash in a $50 prize he previously won playing the same ticket.
His new prize had a few more zeroes at the end.
According to the birthday boy, he almost didn’t realize he was a newly minted millionaire.
He might also have a new favorite number.
“I didn’t notice I had a matching number at first until I scanned it,” he said. “It’s crazy because the matching number was 59 and I just turned 59 the other day.”
“I just sat there stuck. I mean, I couldn’t believe it,” Williams added. “I had to get my head straight.”
To ease his nerves, Williams turned to the one person who could calm him down: his mother.
“She reassured him that everything would be OK and shared in his excitement,” Lottery officials said. “After telling his mother the good news, he put the ticket away and went about his work day.”
During his break, Williams set up his appointment to pick up his seven-figure windfall, which was never far from his mind.
“I tossed and turned all night,” he said. “I still didn’t believe it until I came here.”
With his winnings, Williams said he was only certain about one person who would be taken care of with the money: his mother.
Williams plans to buy his mother a house with some of the jackpot, but the rest will be put into savings, and he said he will have to deliberate further about where to spend his newfound fortune.
