Annual Market Rasen nature day secures much needed National Lottery funding

West Lindsey District Council’s Environment and Sustainability lead, Steve Leary, worked with local volunteer activist Yvonne Horrocks, secretary of the Rasen Area Environment Group (RAEG) and the rest of the group, to secure the funding. It guarantees the future of the event for the next two years and beyond. The council will continue to work with RAEG volunteers to help deliver the event.
The funding, which will cover costs such as a marquee, eco-theatre performances, accessible toilet hire, craft materials for games and volunteer expenses, will ensure that all activities remain free for families and eco enthusiasts.
Cllr Stephen Bunney is the West Lindsey District Council ward member for Market Rasen and Chair of the Council’s Environment and Sustainability Group as well as RAEG. He said he was ‘delighted to see volunteers in Market Rasen’ secure the investment.
He said: “This funding from The National Lottery will make a huge impact to the future of this event, and I am proud that West Lindsey District Council was able to provide support in securing the grant. Wildlife in Your Backyard makes a real difference in inspiring people across the community to get involved in nature and conservation.”
Wildlife in Your Backyard began four years ago and has grown into one of Market Rasen’s most popular annual events, attracting between 300 to 500 people each year. The funding also supports the community garden, community orchards and wildlife planting projects that RAEG deliver throughout the year.
Yvonne Horrocks from RAEG said: “I was over the moon when I found out we were successful in securing the £4,500 from the National Lottery, and we are grateful to West Lindsey District Council for supporting us with the application.
“The funding has meant we can put on lots of engaging activities both this year’s event and in the coming years. As well as the many stalls with animals and wildlife activities, I’m particularly excited to be able to bring Rhubarb Theatre Group back this year as their eco-themed performances are always popular with kids.
“Most importantly though, it means this community-focused event remains free for all at a time when we know families are feeling the pinch. Getting out and enjoying our beautiful countryside and urban greenspaces is a wonderful way to lift spirits and we hope we can encourage more people to do that”
Wildlife in Your Backyard Nature Day takes place on Saturday 13 June 2026, 10am-3pm, at Bell Park, Jameson Bridge Street, Market Rasen (LN8 3EW). Entry and activities are free.
