Start of US Green Card Lottery DV-2027 postponed – date still unclear

Berlin, October 2025 – This year’s submission phase for the US Green Card Lottery DV-2027 has been delayed. Traditionally, the registration period begins on October 1 and ends in early November. However, the start of 2025 has not yet been announced – a first in the history of the program.

One of the reasons for the delay is likely to be the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing government shutdown in the USA. This is a budgetary blockade in which state authorities are running out of financial resources. The introduction of a new participation fee of 1 US dollar, which is to be charged for every lottery application in future, could also have contributed to the postponement. The responsible US State Department has not yet provided any official information on this.

The state-approved emigration counselling center The American Dream from Berlin now expects the lottery to start in the course of November. “The delay shows how strongly political and administrative processes are now influencing international programs such as the Green Card Lottery. This makes it all the more important to be prepared – the submission period can start at any time at short notice,” explains Holger Zimmermann, Managing Director of The American Dream.

Applicants can register on the website www.the-american-dream.com to be notified as soon as the start date has been set. The American Dream takes care of the timely and formal processing of the application and ensures that the application is submitted in a legally secure manner, even under changed conditions.
