An N.W.T. chief has taken home a lottery jackpot.
Ernest Betsina is chief of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation in Dettah and a regular lottery player, according to a release from Lotto Spot, the brand for lotteries in the territory.
On May 16, Betsina won $2.5 million in the Lotto 6/49 draw by matching all five numbers. The $5-million national pot was split with another unnamed winner in Ontario.
“I’ve been buying tickets for a long time,” Betsina is quoted as saying in the release.
He said that upon learning of the win, he “had to take a deep breath and give thanks.”
“I kept it to myself for a few days but later told my sons.”
Betsina declined an interview with CBC News.
In the release, Betsina said he had two plans for the money.
“I’m going to pay some bills and invest the rest,” he said.
The winning ticket was sold at Gastown, a local gas station.
