£499,589 of National Lottery Community Fund for two playgrounds in Wrexham

AVOW, the Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham, has secured the funding from The National Lottery Community Fund to sustain and develop The Land in Plas Madoc and the Gwenfro Valley playground in Caia Park.

The playgrounds are a core part of AVOW’s “Stronger Together – Play and Belonging” project, which will run for five years.

Claire Pugh, AVOW’s play and community development manager, said: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised the importance of play in supporting children, their families, and the wider community.

“Thanks to National Lottery players, our Adventure Playgrounds have a more secure future and can continue inspiring and welcoming the next generation.

“This investment is invaluable, and we are genuinely grateful for the opportunity.

“We are also grateful to Catriona Learmont, Funding Officer, for her support throughout.

“This partnership will make a meaningful impact on our community.”

AVOW has managed The Land for 15 years and took over Gwenfro Valley in 2025 after it faced closure.

Both sites offer child-led, open-access play five days a week, giving children a safe space to explore, build, and socialise.

Dawn Roberts-McCabe, AVOW’s chief officer, said: “This funding will go directly to supporting the running costs of these unique local playgrounds and the wrap-around support they provide.

“It ensures stability for the community and the playworkers, knowing that these vital spaces are more secure.

“This is incredible news.”

In addition to play opportunities, the playgrounds offer family support, signposting services, and a space for children and adults to connect with their community.

The funding will help maintain these services, while AVOW continues to seek additional financial support through grants and donations.

AVOW’s broader mission is to empower people, strengthen organisations, and build resilient communities.

By championing Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child (UNCRC), AVOW positions play as a cornerstone of community wellbeing – a right that connects children, families and communities to brighter futures.

The award will help provide the blend of skilled people, safe spaces, and practical infrastructure, allowing year‑round, reliable, relationship‑based support for children and their families.
