STERLING – The first $1 million grand prize has been claimed in the Massachusetts State Lottery’s “Loteria” instant ticket game.
The winning ticket was sold at Appletown Market on Main Street.
This isn’t the first big win for the store. In 2013, the market sold a $122 million Powerball jackpot, one of two winners nationwide. The other ticket sold in Nebraska. The store received a $50,000 bonus for that particular sale.
As for the latest ticket, the family-run business will receive a $10,000 bonus, which co-owners and brothers Chirag Patel and Sanket Patel said they will put toward store improvements.
“It’s really rare for this community and we are just so fortunate to be able to serve them,” Chirag Patel said. “They have been very good to us, and we are blessed, very, very blessed.”

Trustees Sarah Allen and Robert Bannish claimed the prize on behalf of the 1887 Trust of Boston.
The winnings were claimed by the 1887 Trust of Boston, represented by trustees Robert Bannish and Sarah Allen. The trust opted to receive the winnings as a onetime payment of $650,000, before taxes.
There are two $1 million grand prize tickets remaining in the new game, with one-in-2,688,000 odds of winning.
