$5M lottery win for Surrey woman with โ€˜more flexibility nowโ€™

A Surrey lottery winner of $5 million was on Vancouver Island when she learned of being a multi-millionaire.

โ€œI was at the Country Grocer on Cedar [in Nanaimo] when I found out I won,โ€ recalled Jane D., as identified by BCLC on Monday, Aug. 24.

โ€œI didnโ€™t know how to react. The cashier was almost more ecstatic than me. My husband waited for me in the car to bring out groceries, then I told him. He didnโ€™t believe me at first, then I showed him the validation slip and he counted the zeroes.โ€

Jane won the $5-million Classic Jackpot prize in the Aug. 8 Lotto 6/49 draw with a ticket bought at Rexall on Willow Street in Chemainus.

Plans for the money include home renovations, contributing to investments and future travel.

โ€œItโ€™s very exciting. I have more flexibility now,โ€ Jane says.

Last January BCLC began sharing only the first name and last-name initial for all lottery winners, in an apparent move to protect privacy.

So far in 2026, B.C. lottery players have redeemed more than $50 million in winnings from Lotto 6/49, according to BCLC.
