Legends toast Team Wales success at Glasgow 2026 watch party

The event brought together some of Wales’s most decorated athletes, including legendary Welsh Commonwealth and Olympic sprinter Jamie Baulch and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Chair of Sport Wales and one of Britain’s most successful Paralympic athletes who represented Wales at three Commonwealth Games. They were also joined by a host of Glasgow 2026 medallists including Team Wales captain and para-athlete Olivia Breen, para-athlete Aled Davies, boxer Rosie Eccles and gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper.

Across the evening, the watch party screened further Welsh success as medals continued to flow – including golds for Emma Finucane and Anna Morris in the cycling, and podium finishes for Connor Williams and Orlando Holley-Sotomi in the boxing finals.

Thanks to National Lottery players, more than £33 million is raised every week for good causes. It’s because of you that sport, arts, heritage and community projects, as well as athletes competing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, are supported across the UK.

Jamie Baulch said: “It’s fantastic to be here celebrating everything Team Wales has achieved at Glasgow 2026. These athletes have worked incredibly hard to get here, but none of it would be possible without the support of National Lottery players. Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, whose legendary career yielded 16 medals including 11 golds across five Paralympic Games, knows better than most what it takes to reach the pinnacle of sport – and the investment that makes it possible.

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson said: “Watching Team Wales compete at a Commonwealth Games that feels so close to home has been truly special. The National Lottery has played a vital role in getting these athletes here – from grassroots clubs to elite programmes – and that investment is there for everyone to see in Glasgow. Because of you, Welsh sport continues to thrive.”

Rebecca Edwards-Symmons, Team Wales Chief Executive, said: “Hosting this celebration at Team Wales House has been a brilliant way to bring together the best of Welsh sport, past and present. Glasgow 2026 has been an incredible Games for our athletes, and it’s only right that we take a moment to recognise the role National Lottery players have played in making it possible.”

Sport Wales has awarded over £370 million in National Lottery funding across more than 31,000 grants since 1994 – a long-term investment in Welsh sport that is now being felt on the Commonwealth Games stage.

The National Lottery has invested more than £9 billion into sport across the UK from grassroots to elite level, via 143,000 grants, funding the coaches, facilities and athlete development pathways that have brought each Home Nation team to the start line.

As the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games draws to a close, the impact of National Lottery players’ support is visible everywhere – from the Games venues that have benefited from funding, to the museums and galleries visitors have enjoyed, to the local projects bringing communities together to celebrate.
