Northern Michigan woman wins $2.2 million lottery prize after getting urge to buy ticket
LANSING, MI — A Charlevoix County woman listened to her instincts and ended up winning $2.2 million in the Michigan Lottery’s Millionaire for Life game.
“I’ve been playing Millionaire For Life on and off since the game started earlier this year,” said the 66-year-old winner who chose to remain anonymous. “I had an urge to buy a ticket while I was out and about one day, so I went to the closest store and bought one.
“The next day I scanned my ticket at a store, and a message came up to contact the lottery office. I thought the scanner was broken, so I went out to my car to check the numbers on MichiganLottery.com. I saw a winning ticket was purchased in Mancelona and then I saw I’d matched all five numbers. I yelled: ‘I just won $2.2 million!’ and did a happy dance in my car.”
The player matched all five white balls — 03-15-16-24-28 — in the May 21 drawing to win the prize. She bought her winning ticket at the Mancelona North EZ Mart, located at 8150 US Highway 131 Northeast in Mancelona, roughly 35 miles northeast of Traverse City.
The winner had the choice of receiving $100,000 a year for 20 years or the rest of her life, whichever is greater, or a lump sum. The player elected to receive the lump sum of $2.2 million rather than the annuity. With her winnings, she plans to buy a house, a car and a boat.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Breakfast Club lottery club which claimed an $842 million jackpot in June 2024. The members plan to use the money to buy a home in Florida and travel.
And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a Powerball winner worth $250,000 sold in Bloomfield Hills in 2024 went unclaimed. That money went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
