$20m prize up for grabs
There’s an eye-watering $20 million up for grabs in this week’s Thursday night Powerball.
So far this year, there have been three Powerball division one wins that have collected more than $186.6 million.
In 2021, 14 Powerball division one winners across Australia pocketed more than $550 million in prize money.
Of these wins, seven landed in NSW, four in Queensland, two in Victoria and one in Western Australia.
The last time somebody snapped up a $20 million jackpot was in September last year.
After initially ignoring the calls, a young Canberra couple finally answered the phone to the revelation they were $20 million richer.
The Belconnen couple in their 30s held the only division one winning entry in Powerball for Thursday, September 2.
In addition to winning the division one jackpot of $20,507,103.16, the couple’s PowerHit entry also scored division two 19 times, bolstering their total windfall to $20,852,900.31.
“Oh my god,” the winning man exclaimed while his wife screamed in the background.
“I saw I had two missed calls, and I thought, ‘Who’s calling me at this time?’ I thought, ‘I’m not answering this. They’re probably ringing with bad news.’ I’m glad I answered now.
“We were literally still working when you called.”
The couple revealed a last-minute decision had netted them the eight-figure windfall.
“I don’t buy lottery tickets that often, but lately we’ve been like, ‘Let’s just do it. Who knows?’” the man continued.
“No jokes, two nights ago, I was lying in bed, and these numbers pop into my head randomly.
“I bought a ticket into Set for Life using those numbers. But while I was getting that, I just thought I’d throw in a PowerHit entry as Powerball had $20 million.
“You’ve got to be in it to win it.
“This is just going to mean a lot for the whole family.
“I want to help my parents and siblings. I want to buy a house for our young family. It’s going to make a world of difference.”
