Trans Pennine Trail wins funding to protect heritage and improve access

The trail has been awarded a £148,197 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to protect and share the Trail’s heritage.
The long-distance, multi-user route connects communities and landscapes across the North of England.
The Trans Pennine Trail passes through Oldham, including the Saddleworth, before continuing north towards the moors of Rochdale.
Without continued investment, opportunities to improve access, safeguard heritage and engage new audiences would be limited.
John Wilson, chair of the Trans Pennine Trail, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have secured this support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
“Thanks to National Lottery players, we will be able to protect and celebrate the rich heritage of the Trans Pennine Trail, while making it more accessible, engaging and sustainable for the future.
“This investment is a real vote of confidence in the value of the Trail and the communities it serves.”
Funding will support the recruitment of a full-time apprentice focused on heritage development and community engagement, alongside specialist support in business development, income diversification, marketing, communications and digital accessibility.
Planned improvements include the redevelopment of the Trail’s website and digital resources to increase accessibility for a broader audience.
The scheme will also boost volunteer recruitment, training and support—empowering volunteers as local ambassadors.
Events, workshops and activities designed for schools and community groups will encourage wider public engagement and learning.

The project will deliver on The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s four investment principles by conserving the Trail’s assets, promoting responsible and inclusive use, and improving long-term organisational sustainability.
This includes investment in skills, partnerships and income generation.
The new funding aims to increase its reach and impact, ensuring even more people have the opportunity to enjoy and learn from the resource on their doorstep.
