Australia’s newest Powerball winner reveals big spending plans

The life of one lucky lotto player has changed forever after he scooped all of Thursday’s $40 million Powerball jackpot.

Gaming authorities have confirmed there was just the single division one winner for Powerball draw #1561, a man from Castle Hill, NSW who initially thought he had won $40,000.

Incredibly, his $40 million windfall was bolstered a further $800,000 thanks to a PowerHit entry that scored him division two 19 times and other divisional prizes.

“When the phone started ringing, I thought it was random so didn’t answer,” he said.

“But then I got (a text from The Lott), so I glanced at The Lott app. At first, I thought I’d won $40,000. It actually took a little bit of time to compute. Then I realised it was $40 million.

“I never win anything. But I have to admit, when I put this ticket on this afternoon, I thought I just might win.”

The all-important numbers needed to take it home were: 27, 13, 15, 19, 14, 3 and 7. The Powerball was 18.

“We’re going to get a new house, a new car and a beach house. And we might not work ever again,” the winning man’s wife said.

Twenty-one players will pocket $36,310 each in division two, and 104 ticket holders will bank $9000 in division three.

Powerball soared to $40 million because the division one prize was not won for three straight weeks.

Division one will now reset to $5 million for the draw on April 23.
