National Lottery announces huge new game change coming this summer

Powerball will launch in the UK later this year

The National Lottery has unveiled a huge overhaul set to launch later this year – the biggest of its kind since the game began in 1994.

This summer the first new draw-based game in the National Lottery’s history will be launched with the UK’s version of the Powerball.

The Powerball launch in the summer will see UK players pay £4 per line to compete with their US counterparts in the world’s biggest jackpot game for the first time.

National Lottery operator Allwyn said: “The completion of the transformation enables the rollout of new commercial initiatives in the United Kingdom, completes the incurrence of transformation-related costs and initiates the recovery phase for these costs.

“It therefore marks an important inflection point in the financial profile of the business.”

Andria Vidler, CEO of Allwyn UK, commented: “We’re delighted to be joining the Powerball community. Our ambition is to bring more games, more innovation and more excitement to The UK National Lottery – and it doesn’t get more exciting than Powerball, with its transformative jackpots and life-changing contribution to good causes.”

Powerball draws take place in the United States every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at around 4am UK time. The deadline for playing will work slightly differently to the Lotto or EuroMillions draws – tickets will have to be purchased by 11:55pm to enter the following day’s draw.

In the new Powerball draw, matching all five numbers plus the Powerball can win you the jackpot which starts at around £12m, which is paid out over 30 years. If no one wins, the jackpot rolls over and could reportedly reach as high as £1billion.

Matching five numbers can win players £1m, as well as smaller prizes for matching some of the numbers – including £8 for matching two numbers.

On top of the new Powerball, Lotto’s new format will launch this month, giving players two chances to win for every £2 ticket in its main draw for the first time ever.

The change will be rolled out from June 7 and is expected to more than double the number of Lotto millionaires – from around 140 a year to about 345.

And Allwyn has signalled there were more National Lottery launches to come.
